September 17, 2010

Last night I found a windfall at the Lake. The Lake is our ritzy neighborhood. They throw away perfectly good shit! I found a large trash bag stuffed with pots and pans. Some had never been used.

My girlfriend confiscated a few of the nicest ones, they were in pristine condition and better than the crap that we had. There was a heart shaped baking pan, we gave that to her daughter.

I picked up an old exercise bike - that sucker weighed over 100 pounds.

It is amazing how nice most people are. Some help me load the truck, other direct me to more scrap they have in their yard. I posted to my friends on Facebook that I will be happy to dismantle and haul away metal sheds or other metal garbage for free.  In twenty minutes I had two responses - people that have a lot of stuff they need to dispose of.

In Millville, we are fortunate that the city takes virtually anything on trash day. In neighboring Bridgeton, they have to pay $3 for every bag of trash in excess of the one can they are allowed per week. Needless to say, the pickin's are sparse in Bridgeton. In local Buena Borough, you can't toss anything except for typical household waste. Again, the opportunities to collect scrap on trash day are limited.

My goal is to be able to collect $500 worth of scrap per week. But I want to do this with only a few hours of effort daily. I am lucky to be self-employed, and to work out of my home. Scrapping is turning out to be a perfect way to supplement my meager income.
