Rule #2: READ THE INVOICE, MORON!
It's common sense, but even the best of us don't read the fine print always. That happened to me today. I dropped off a load of scrap, signed the invoice at the office, and picked up the cash.
It wasn't until I got home that I read the invoice, and saw that I was only paid for the shredder feed, but hadn't been paid for the aluminum and stainless steel I left. Fortunately the folks at Cumberland Recycling are honest, and they had the money set aside for me when I called them. They said they would hold it until my next stop there.
Yesterday afternoon I hit the west and south sides of town early. I am finding out that you have to head out around 1PM, a few hours before people are actually supposed to put out the garbage. You get the earlybirds, and generally those doing a big house cleaning will start earlier to get everything to the curb.
There was one house that had the mother-lode. Apparently the occupants were moving, as most of the stuff on the curb was of high quality. Unfortunately, that was the only good pick of the day. I think the beginning or very end of the month is best, that is when most renters are moving.
I did a second run on the south side this morning. Nobody beat me, I found some scrap - but not a whole lot. In all I had a 160 pound load today. I am thinking that I need to average 300 lbs a day to make this worth while.
